TORONTO, January 20, 2022 – The Toronto Region Board of Trade applauds today’s announcement by the Ontario government that effective January 31, it will gradually ease restrictions on businesses, while maintaining protective measures. The reopening plan will provide relief to our more than 13,500 members at a critical time.
As we enter the third year of the pandemic, the Board of Trade urges Premier Ford and the Ontario government to build on this phased reopening by swiftly implementing new, proactive measures that will ensure the Toronto region’s businesses reopen and stay open.
On Wednesday, the Board of Trade issued a letter to Premier Ford and Minister of Health Christine Elliott urging the Ontario government to swiftly implement six key actions that will help to ensure this is the last time Toronto-area businesses face lockdowns and other restrictive measures.
The region’s business community deserves the confidence that all possible steps are being taken to avoid future lockdowns. COVID-19 will not disappear overnight. The pathway to a healthy, robust recovery must be data-driven, with plans to address the spread of the virus through less-disruptive, proactive measures, like the ones outlined in the Board of Trade’s letter. These measures should be designed to avoid the need for future lockdowns while helping business stay ahead of emerging trends to protect their employees, customers and our path to a strong economic recovery.
